Damascus is the outdoor enthusiast's paradise! There is a multitude of trails, over a thousand rental bicycles, creeks for kayaking or exploring, and plenty of rock-face to climb. Damascus is the home of the annual Trail Days festival, and is known as Trail Town USA due to the convergence of four scenic trails in the town, including the Appalachian Trail, the TransAmerica Trail, and the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Trail Days festival is held around the end of May each year and draws in excess of 20,000 tourists, making it the largest single gathering of Appalachian Trail hikers anywhere.

There are other great parks and festivals within a stones through of Damascus. Backbone Rock is located on TN Highway 133. You can literally walk across the top of this rock archway and view the highway below and the mountain stream that flows near by. Mount Rogers National Recreational Area offers many camping opportunities. Campgrounds include: Beartree, Grindstone, Hurricane, Comers Rock & Raven Cliff. Every year the Naturalist Rally Committee assembles a wide variety of excellent field trips with leaders who are experts in their field. One of these trips is the Mount Rogers Naturalist's Rally. Their goal is to make the Mount Rogers area ecology understandable and interesting for everyone, from inquisitive amateurs to accomplished naturalists. This event is held annunally at the beginning of May. The second-highest mountain in Virginia is Whitetop Mountain. Its summit provides panoramic views of three states. It also provides 3 festivals to enjoy throughout the year: The Whitetop Mountain Maple Festival (last full weekend of March), the Whitetop Mountain Ramp Festival (third Sunday of May), and the Whitetop Mountain Molasses Festival (second Sunday of October).

A great way to experience the heartbeat of Damascus is to stay at a Bed and Breakfast. Each B&B has its own story... a story that plays into the history of Damascus. Beyond providing an atmosphere of warmth and coziness, the owner of a bed and breakfast can provide advice on where to find the best-kept secrets in the area.

With great shopping, lodging and the beautify of nature all conveniently located within walking distance, this rustic retreat is a must see.
